Food and Drink: Tanzanians like their meat grilled, and they do it very well.
Must Eats:
- Chicken skewers and mashed potatoes at Chef’s Pride in Dar Es Salaam.
- The Mixed Grill at Khan’s BBQ in Arusha is an absolute must (Mosque Street just north of the market). We basically stopped over in Arusha again just so we could go back. The mixed grill comes with Zanzibar pizza (like a quiche), fries, and a ton of side salads at the “salad bar”.
- The Mediteranean pizza at Pizza Inn (no, not the U.S. one).
- Also, definitely try chapatti with vegetable curry.
Highlights:
- Zanzibar.
- Going on safari – our tour guide, Pablo, who was awesome, just started his own company… here´s his site: www.flamingotoursafari-tz.com .
- Visiting a local village in Moshi.
- Olias, our Moshi guide – anyone heading out this way should contact him. Here´s his email - n_benne@yahoo.com. Read Olais the Great blog under the Tanzanian section for more details on our adventures with him.
- All of the friends we made in Tanzania (Mukada, Saif, Ally, Olais, Pablo, and all the rest).
- The Sony factory fixing our video camera.
- MJ winning nearly 59,000 shillings at the New Africa Hotel in Dar on roulette.
Best Deals:
- In Dar, the Lutheran Hostel has the best location but its often booked.
- The Econolodge always has a light on (and a room and air conditioning), even if it’s in a sketchier area.
- The Backpacker’s Hostel in Arusha is $5/night/bed.
- $1 bottles of Konyagi (Tanzanian gin) at Shoprite.
- An internet place on Morogoro Road in Dar has 3 hours of internet for $0.77.
- And, believe it or not, Sunset Bungalows has a doubles for $40/night and that’s the best bang for your buck in Kendwa, Zanzibar (ugh).
