Route: Bus from Costa Rica to Border (Penas Blancas)- San Juan Del Sur - Granada -Managua - Honduras

Total Number of Days: 5
***See below for breakdown

Budget
Overall Average Per Day: $27

Interesting Expenditures:

  • Cost at Border (Visa and Other Fees): $8
  • Average Cost of Room: $8.80/person
  • Average Food per Day: $7.30
  • Average Spent on Water Each Day: $1.03
  • Average Spent Alcohol Each Day: $2.10

Food and Drink: We didn’t have a lot of time to find or try Nicaraguan specialties, and they weren’t easy to find in the gringo-areas where we were staying.  We tried the fried cheese but weren’t big fans; however, we were told that other types of cheese were better fried than the one we had been served.

Must Eats:

  • Gallo-Pinto is a rice and beans breakfast specialty that we liked.  You can find it on almost any breakfast menu.
  • Flor de Cana Rum: This is a Nicaraguan Rum and it’s very tasty.

Highlights:

  • Making it over the border safely with Jenny and Jerry
  • Surviving a black out over rum drinks with Nikki and Jess
  • Pigging out on American food in the air-conditioned Road House Grill in Granada

Best Deals:

  • Flor De Cana Rum: Usually hard liquor is out of our price range, but Flor de Cana wasn’t, especially when shared among friends.  You can buy half bottles of it with two cokes for $7 in a bar.  We split a half bottle four ways and it was enough.
