Route: (flew in from Qatar to) Cairo-Luxor-Aswan-Cairo
Total number of days - 8
**See below for breakdown
Budget:
Overall Average: $29/day
Interesting Expenditures:
- Overnight train from Cairo to Aswan in private compartment: $60.
- Average amount spent on food per day: $6.39.
- Smoking a hookah: $1
Food and Drink: All of the Lebanese food was amazing, like Qatar (but cheaper).
Must Eats:
- Mixed grill
- Various eggplant dishes
- Shwarma
Highlights:
- Smoking shisha.
- Honing our bargaining skills in the Khan-e-Khalili.
- Seeing the mummies at the Egyptian museum.
- Walking across the desert from the Valley of the Kings to Hatshepsut’s temple.
- Seeing the Giza Pyramids during a sandstorm.
- Medinet Habu is amazing… The books say it only takes 30 minutes if you’re in a hurry, but you definitely need more time than that. Go during the middle of the day when everyone else is eating and you can have the place almost to yourself.
Best Deal: $20 for a double room in the Cleopatra Hotel in Tahrir Square. It may be high for budget travel, but people on the other side of the square are paying $200+ a night to stay in the Nile Hilton, and the Cleopatra is pretty upscale… for budget travelers, at least.
