**See below for breakdown

Budget: Overall Average: $26/day

Interesting Expeditures:

  • Superpancho (a huge hotdog): US$0.58
  • A Bottle of Wine at the Grocery Store: US$1.50
  • A Huge Chunk of Blue Cheese at the Grocery Store: US$1.25
  • Sending 30 Postcards from Ushuaia (the End of the World): US$50
  • Average Spent on Food per Day: $8.38
  • Average Spent on Local Travel: $2.39
  • Total Spent on Alcohol (for a month): $75
  • Total Spent on Chocolate in Bariloche: $18.82
  • Total Spent on Major Travel: $320.33

Food and Drink:
Wine, Cheese and Beef. These delights are everywhere and they’re amazing. You can’t miss them (and you won’t want to leave them). (And just to reiterate, La Cabrera had amazing and affordable steak. It’s in Palermo, Buenos Aires on the corner of La Cabrera and Thames.)

Must Eats:

  • Blue Cheese Pizza
  • Empanadas at Gourmet Empanadas (http://www.empanadasgourmet.com.ar/) and Zappos — especially try the blue cheese and ham, onion and cheese and the caprese.
  • Pumpkin Ravioli with Four Cheese Sauce at Bar El Federal in San Telmo, Buenos Aires (Corner of Carlos Calvo and Peru Streets)
  • White Chocolate Ice Cream (among other flavors) at Nonna Bianca, San Telmo, Buenos Aires (Corner of Defensa and Estados Unidos Streets)
  • The Hamburger (and beer specials until 10pm) at Gilbraltor, San Telmo, Buenos Aires (on Peru near Estados Unidos)
  • The Lomito, a steak sandwich that’s better than any steak sandwich you’ve ever eaten.
  • Malbec Wine (because it’s the Argentinian specialty, although the Malbec blends are better) and Tempranillo Wine (because it’s really, really good).
  • The Tenedor Libre Parilla in Ushuaia, which includes pork that is roasted for hours beforehand.
  • Blue Cheese Trout and the chocolate in Bariloche.

Highlights:

  • Buenos Aires — the food, the drinks, the all-night atmosphere. It was easy to get around a cheap, like a cheaper NYC (in Spanish).
  • Cheese and wine picnic with Randi and Tiff
  • Late nights at Gilbrator and FanChopps with Shosha and Taylor.
  • Iguazu Falls
  • Perito Moreno Glacier
  • Hiking in Bariloche
  • Reaching the End of the World

Best Deals:

  • Steak Dinner for Two (plus a bottle of wine and 12 sides) at La Cabrera: $10
  • The Guia-T (the best map of Buenos Aires): $1
  • Ride on the Bus or Subway in Buenos Aires: $0.25
  • An Empanada at Gourmet Empanadas: $0.45

Note: English language books were hard to find and expensive. Guide books were especially expensive with a 25% or more markup over U.S. prices. We only found one used bookstore (Walrus Books on Estados Unidos in San Telmo).
